Understanding Emotional Pain and Why You Build Walls of Protection
You have had many bad experiences in your life. Not all of your bad experiences will become stored bad memories. Why do some bad memories stick around and others fade?
Memories stick around when you are not able to make sense of them. These experiences leave you feeling as if you are in emotional or physical danger. When the only sense you can make of the experience is how bad of a person you are and how much you messed up your brain will store them with the hope not to repeat them.
If you felt like no one cared about you or was there for you when you experienced something bad it is likely that your brain will store that memory as a way to protect yourself in the future.
Because these memories are filled with pain and danger they lead to your body having physical discomfort whenever they are brought into the awareness. You will build a wall of protection from your pain. The wall will lead to you hiding the painful parts of yourself. Your authentic self will become blind to these painful experiences to keep from feeling overwhelmed by them. Unfortunately, these walls are like mazes where your authentic self also becomes trapped behind them.
Tearing Down Your Emotional Walls
It's can be scary to explore the painful memories. Opening up and sharing your true thoughts, feelings, and experiences takes courage.
Painful experiences lead to you having parts that protect you from emotional pain. This is done unconsciously. It is your way of trying to keep yourself safe. But unfortunately, this act of hiding pain and pushing it away is not healing.
You will notice this when one of your painful memories breaches its imprisoned wall and you become overwhelmed by the pain it carries.
Vulnerability
Vulnerability is often seen as a weakness, but it's actually a strength. It allows you to be open and honest with yourself which builds trust. When you're able to be vulnerable, you're also able to connect with yourself on a deeper level.
Allowing yourself to be vulnerable can be scary, but it's worth it. When you're able to allow your authentic self to take the lead in your life, you'll find that you're able to live a more fulfilling life.
Hiding your authentic self only leads to emptiness and disconnection. So be brave and take the step towards freeing your true self.
What are some ways that you can allow yourself to be more vulnerable?
1. Give yourself permission to be vulnerable.
2. Talk about your experiences with someone you trust.
3. Identify your emotional triggers and work on addressing them.
4. Be honest with yourself about your thoughts and feelings.
5. Allow yourself to feel all of your emotions, even the painful ones.
6. Don't be afraid to show your true self to others.
Stop hiding your authentic self and take the steps to free yourself. It might just change your life for the better.
